Fractions, Oh My!

This week looks like it will turn out to be an interesting week!  Some of our caterpillars are starting to climb up to the top of their jar and I am super pleased that the students are understanding fractions.  This is a very trick concept (parts and wholes), but the students have jumped right into the challenge and are now easily saying 1 out of 4 when describing sets of objects.  Here's what else we're learning this week:

Language Arts:  We are still working on cause and effect and making connections to books.  In writing, we are working on word choice when writing sentences and finding substitutes for the words "cool" and "awesome".  I am also having the students keep working on fixing those capital letters in the middle of sentences.

Math:  Fractions again this week!  The focus this week will be on sets of objects and the fraction of the sets.  This is a very trickly concept because you have to look at a set of objects (4) and say that is is half of 8.  I am having the students use lots of things to help with this (blocks, tiles, cookies:)), but I know they can do it!

Social Studies:  We should wrap up our unit on economics this week and will be doing a service for the school this week.  Last week, we were producers and made a good (bird seed feeders).  The students will be bringing these home this week.

Notes:  Have a great week!
