Bring on the May Flowers!

Wow!  May starts on Thursday.  April really flew by and we are now 2 and a half weeks away from the Reading SOL.   This week there will lots of review and some material.  Field Day will also be on Friday from 9-12.  Here is what we are learning/reviewing this week:

Language Arts:  The focus next week will be on identifying the characteristics of different genres.  Students will also have a review of synonyms and antonyms.  We will also be reviewing test taking strategies and will take 2 practice reading tests this week.  In writing, students will be finishing up their "important event" stories and will continue to use the writing process to work on their self selected essays.  There will be spelling and word work this week.
Math:  We are almost done with our measurement unit.  This week the focus will be on capacity.  Students are responsible for memorizing their measurement facts (2 cups=1 pint, 2 pints=1 quart, 4 quarts=1 gallon, 1000 mL=1 L).  We will also be reviewing ordering and comparing fractions and decimals.
Science:  We are working on our unit on Living Systems.  Last week, students formed their teams and are working on solving the problem of filling an empty space in the Norfolk Zoo.  Teams will create a new creature and design a habitat for their creature.  In order to do this, they will need to learn a lot about living systems and adaptations of animals this week and next week.
Notes:  Field Day Friday!!!
